Join us Saturday, June 20-21, 2026 for the Lao Rocket Festival, known in Lao as Boun Bang Fai (ບຸນບັ້ງໄຟ), one of Laos’ most famous traditional festivals. It is celebrated each year during May and June, just before the rainy season begins. The festival combines Buddhist merit-making, ancient agricultural traditions, music, dancing, parades, and the launching of homemade rockets into the sky.
Purpose of the Festival
The festival’s main purpose is to:
- Ask the heavens for abundant rainfall.
- Promote fertility and a successful rice-growing season.
- Bring communities together before the hard work of planting begins.
- Preserve Lao cultural traditions and folklore.
Origin and Legend
According to Lao folklore, people launch rockets to communicate with Phaya Thaen, the Sky God and Rain God. Ancient legends tell of a struggle between earthly beings and the Sky God, after which people began sending rockets skyward as a reminder to send rain for crops. The tradition predates modern Buddhism and likely evolved from ancient fertility rites.
Festival Activities
The celebration usually lasts two to three days and includes:
- Buddhist ceremonies at local temples.
- Colorful village parades.
- Traditional Lao music and dancing.
- Decorated rockets displayed by competing villages.
- Rocket-launching competitions.
- Traditional Lao food and community feasts.
Rocket Competition
Teams build large bamboo rockets and compete to:
- Launch the highest rocket.
- Achieve the longest flight time.
- Create the most beautifully decorated rocket.
Traditionally, teams whose rockets fail to launch may receive humorous punishments,
such as being tossed into mud or water.
Cultural Importance
Boun Bang Fai is considered one of the major annual Lao festivals and is an important symbol of Lao identity, community spirit, agriculture, and faith. It continues to be celebrated not only in Laos but also by Lao communities in the United States, France, and other countries.
